KHIE Monthly Update – July 2026

From the desk of Rachael Roehrig, Deputy Executive Director of KHIE

As we move into the second half of 2026, I want to thank you for your continued engagement with KHIE. In the previous two editions of this newsletter, we've focused on what KHIE can do for you by highlighting our portal, tools, and applications that support care coordination, public health reporting, and better health outcomes for Kentuckians. In this issue, we turn the spotlight to the people behind that work. We are excited to introduce you to some of the dedicated staff who support participants every day in our "Meet the KHIE Team" feature below.

I'd like to formally invite each one of you to our next webinar: Get to Know KHIE: Meet the Team and See Our Tools in Action on August 12 at 12:00 p.m. ET / 11:00 a.m. CT. In this session we will focus on providing attendees a deeper look into KHIE. Meet our team, learn more about our processes and current enhancement initiatives, and get a live look at one of our most critical clinical applications in action. I encourage you to attend and learn more about what KHIE can offer, and all we're doing to improve the participant experience. We look forward to seeing you there!

Tool Spotlight: Clinical Information

Clinical Information application screenshot

Our Clinical Information application is accessed easily from the Patient Search or application tile in the KHIE Portal and provides a single place to view a selected patient's longitudinal clinical records.

The Clinical Information application brings together a patient's key health data into one place, removing the need to log into multiple applications or search through data silos. Here you'll find a summary of a patient's problems, diagnoses, allergies, medications, immunizations, lab results, imaging, and recent encounters.

★ Bonus! Save even more time by using the My Patient Summary feature in the Clinical Information application. You can "pin" the tabs and data you view most often, so they appear on the front page for every patient. This can help to reduce the need to toggle between different sections to find the information you need.

Progress Updates: Strengthening the Exchange

As part of our commitment to transparency and continuous improvement, the KHIE team is actively advancing several initiatives designed to strengthen the exchange and enhance the participant experience. These include:

  • Patient Matching Enhancements – Continuing refinements to improve patient identity matching and data accuracy across participating organizations.
  • Historical Data Migration (Phase 1) – The first phase began on 7/16 to integrate historical clinical data into the new KHIE environment, expanding access to longitudinal patient information. Please refer to the first newsletter edition for detailed information on this project and timelines.
  • Participant Onboarding Improvements – Streamlining onboarding processes and documentation to provide a more consistent and predictable experience for new participants. We are finishing these improvements to begin onboarding those in the current queue very soon!
  • Interoperability Enhancements – Advancing interface improvements and data exchange capabilities to better support providers, public health, and partners across the Commonwealth.

⚠ Access notice: 403 error – Some KHIE users recently experienced a 403 error when attempting to log into the KHIE Portal. Our team worked closely with our technology vendor to investigate the issue and as of July 23, a resolution has been implemented. An update has been emailed to participants.

  • If you continue to experience login issues, please contact the KHIE Support Team for assistance at 800-633-6283.
  • This tip-sheet for resolving this issue is posted under 'Services' on the KHIE website.

Did You Know: July is UV Safety Awareness Month!

July is UV Safety Awareness Month, a timely reminder of the impact that sun exposure can have on skin and overall health. Consistent use of sun protection, such as using a broad-spectrum sunscreen, seeking shade during peak temperature hours, and wearing protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses, is essential to reducing the risks of prolonged UV exposure. For many patients, maintaining regular check-ups with a dermatologist is the first line in identifying potential concerns.

Dermatology data in the KHIE Portal helps build a more complete picture of a patient's health and supports coordinated, preventive care. When dermatologists contribute clinical data—such as encounter information, pathology and laboratory results, diagnoses, clinical findings, and follow-up recommendations—it helps close critical information gaps for other treating providers. This shared information supports safer medication management, improves care team coordination, promotes earlier intervention, and helps reduce the risk of patients being lost to follow-up.

Are you a dermatology practice interested in participating in KHIE? Contact your KHIE Outreach Coordinator to learn more about how you can get connected and take advantage of the services available!
