Welcome to the second edition of KHIE Monthly Updates! We are excited for the opportunity to continue sharing KHIE news, portal updates, and helpful resources to get you the most out of KHIE's tools and services.

I would like to thank everyone who joined us for our first webinar, Welcome to Your New KHIE Portal! With a whopping 897 people registered, and 529 attending the live webinar on June 9^th, we were thrilled by the strong turnout and engagement from participants across the Commonwealth. Additionally, we received more than 60 thoughtful questions submitted before and during the session. It was wonderful to see so much interest in learning more about KHIE and the capabilities of the new KHIE Portal.

KHIE in Action: Connecting Healthcare Across Kentucky

The Kentucky Health Information Exchange (KHIE) network continues to expand its reach and impact, connecting hospitals, ambulatory providers, and many other healthcare organizations across the state. The information users access every day comes from data feeds across the state that securely exchange health information to support informed clinical decision-making and coordinated care.

Since migrating to the new KHIE Portal in March of 2026, we continue to see increased adoption and utilization. Currently, we have 731 provider users and over 67 million messages coming in.

Powering Public Health

As Kentucky's public health reporting authority, in partnership with the Kentucky Department for Public Health (KDPH), KHIE helps connect healthcare providers, hospitals, laboratories, and public health agencies across the Commonwealth. Through KHIE, participating organizations can efficiently share critical health information that supports public health monitoring, disease prevention, and community health improvement efforts.

KHIE enables providers to submit immunization data to the Kentucky Immunization Registry, share syndromic surveillance information to help identify and respond to emerging health trends and outbreaks, and streamline reporting of reportable conditions through electronic laboratory reporting (ELR) and electronic case reporting (eCR). By reducing administrative burden and improving the timeliness of data sharing, KHIE helps ensure public health officials have the information they need to protect and improve the health of Kentuckians.

Since March 2026, KHIE has supported the submission of:

• 926,032 immunization reports
• 3,084,099 electronic lab reports
• 35,429,748 syndromic surveillance reports
• 3,173,089 electronic case reports

Real-Time Event Notifications Support Better Care Coordination

KHIE's Event Notification Service helps healthcare providers stay informed about important patient care events by delivering real-time alerts directly through the KHIE Portal. These notifications are generated when a patient visits an emergency department, is admitted to a hospital, or is discharged from inpatient care.

Since March 2026, more than 2.5 million event notifications have been delivered to care teams across Kentucky. By providing timely visibility into patient encounters, these alerts help support care coordination, improve follow-up efforts, reduce gaps in care, and enable providers to make more informed decisions for the patients they serve.

Your Role in Strengthening KHIE

While KHIE provides powerful tools and services to support patient care, the exchange is only as strong as the data that flows through it. Active participation from healthcare organizations is essential to ensuring providers have access to the most complete and timely information possible.

By sharing data with KHIE and maintaining accurate patient panels, participating organizations create a more complete and comprehensive health record for the patients they serve. This exchange of information supports care coordination, reduces unnecessary and duplicative testing, improves transitions of care, and helps ensure providers have access to the information they need when and where it matters most.

If your organization currently receives data from KHIE but does not yet contribute data to the exchange, we encourage you to connect with the KHIE team to explore available data-sharing opportunities. Expanding participation helps create a more complete health record for patients across care settings, strengthens the value of the exchange for all users, and advances our shared mission of improving health outcomes for Kentuckians.

A recent study published in the Annals of Family Medicine (link provided below) highlights that provider use of a Health Information Exchange (HIE) improves access to critical patient information, supporting better care coordination and more informed clinical decisions. Every organization that shares data with KHIE helps build a more complete health record, reducing duplicate testing and improving care for patients across Kentucky. If your organization currently receives data from KHIE but does not yet contribute, we encourage you to partner with the KHIE team to strengthen this statewide resource for everyone.

Tool Spotlight: Population Explorer

Population Explorer is a powerful, web-based tool within the KHIE Portal designed to help physicians and care teams more easily identify, prioritize, and manage patient needs in near real time. By transforming KHIE data into actionable patient insights, Population Explorer supports proactive care management and helps organizations close gaps in care more efficiently.

With Population Explorer, users can review and track patients' latest encounters, preventive service alerts, and population health trends. Whether you are identifying patients overdue for preventive screenings, monitoring elevated A1c levels, or reviewing patients with frequent emergency department utilization, the tool makes it easier to focus on the patients who need the most attention.

Flexible filtering tools allow users to customize and refine patient lists based on specific criteria. Basic filtering options support targeted searches for specific datasets, such as diagnosis codes, while the Advanced Filter Builder enables more detailed queries using customizable "and/or/not" logic. This allows clinicians and care teams to easily drill down on the precise information they need and tailor workflows to their patient population goals.

The Advanced Filter Builder feature allows users to target specific datasets based on their submitted patient panels. Using only one panel, the feature can filter and return detailed results on the patient population in the panel.

Some examples of the use of Advanced Filter Builder include:

• Searching for all patients on a selected panel who have visited the ER 3 or more times in the last 90 days.
  • In this scenario, one panel would be selected, the encounter type would be set to Emergency, the time frame is the last 90 days, and the number of visits is set to 3 or more. Results will be returned that match this exact set of criteria.
• Another example would be a search on two panels, for patients who have Emergency, Inpatient, Observation, or Outpatient encounters with diagnosis codes related to pregnancy.
  • In this scenario, the two panels of interest would be selected; the types of encounters to be selected include Emergency, Inpatient, Observation, and Outpatient; and the diagnosis codes related to pregnancy would be entered.

The most identified use cases/filters users create include:

• Filtering by a specific list of diagnosis codes.
• Selecting "discharges or admissions" in the last number of days.
• Filtering through two panels for specific encounter types (Emergency, Inpatient, Outpatient, etc.).
• Filtering to only Inpatient and Emergency encounter types, excluding a single named facility.

Population Explorer also gives users significant control over how information is displayed and prioritized. Preferences can be customized directly within the module, helping each user create a view that best supports workflow and care management priorities.

By making population-level data more accessible and actionable, Population Explorer helps clinicians and care teams streamline outreach efforts, prioritize at-risk patients, track interventions, and support coordinated, consistent care without adding unnecessary clicks or administrative burden.

Access to Population Explorer is managed by your designated KHIE Admin. Users can access the tool directly from the KHIE Portal landing page via the Population Explorer panel on the right side of the screen, as shown below.

Did You Know: June is Men's Health Month!

June is Men's Health Month, which provides a timely reminder of the importance of keeping up to date with annual physical exams and preventive screenings for early detection of health issues. Monitoring vitals and labs such as blood pressure and cholesterol, and preventive screenings for diabetes, colon cancer and prostate cancer are critical to catching problems early and improving long-term outcomes.

In this newsletter, we highlighted the Population Explorer tool which can serve as your tool for identifying patients who are due or overdue for preventive screenings, or who are at increased risk from diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol. When you upload and share screening and lab results through KHIE, all other members of a patient's care team, such as primary care, specialists, behavioral health, and care managers, can benefit from access to this information. This shared view helps reduce duplicative testing, supports coordinated follow-up, and ensures a patient's entire care team is working from the most up-to-date picture of the patient's health.
